3 Features To Look For In A Hunting Rifle For Small Game Hunters

Wade Moreno

Whether it is open season on rabbit, squirrels, or otherwise, as an avid small game hunter, you are probably rounding up all of your hunting gear in nervous anticipation of the hunting days to come. Before you grab that usual shotgun from your gun safe, it may be time to consider picking up a new hunting rifle. From newbies at hunting to well-seasoned small game hunters, many have no idea just how much a well-designed hunting rifle can add to their usual activities. Take a look at some of the top features to look for in a hunting rifle for small game hunting.

Totable Size and Weight

Think about all of the stuff you tend to take with you when you go on a hunt. If you are like most hunters, you will be packing everything from extra ammo and cover scent to bottled water and binoculars. Plus, as you collect small game during a successful hunt, you will be carrying your meat out of the woods as well. Having a gun that is sized right so that it is totable will be important. Go for something lightweight in design and compact enough that carrying the firearm through the woods during a hunt will not be a burden.

Shot Accuracy

For larger game, such as deer and elk, shot accuracy is important, but it is even more important when your target is small game because your target is much smaller. You need to be able to pull up your firearm and confidently aim and take your shot without struggling extensively to do so or risking hitting the game in the wrong spot and spoiling the meat. Some of the smaller rifles have a little better accuracy for smaller targets, but there are some high-powered rifles that give good accuracy with long ranges as well.

Fitting Stock Construction

The stock of the rifle oftentimes doesn't get the credit it deserves as a functional part of the gun. However, if the stock is not appropriately designed, it can totally hinder how successful you are with every shot. Look for a rifle stock that fits you, but most importantly, look for a rifle stock that fits your usual hunting methods. For example, if you use a scope instead of open sights on the barrel, you need a stock that does not deep too far down so you can rest the butt of the gun against your shoulder securely while lining up your shot through the scope.
