Kayak Paddle: The Tools, Accessories And Modifications For Fishing

Wade Moreno

If you're looking to make the transition from shore or boat angling to kayak fishing, getting the right paddle and technique can make a huge difference.

Here are some things to consider when you're looking for kayak paddles to increase your odds of catching more fish.

The Right Tool

Choosing the wrong type of kayak paddle for the type of fishing you do can create challenges that can detract from your time on the water.

  • Length: The first thing to consider when buying a kayak paddle is length. When choosing length, it's important to consider the average distance you paddle on your kayak fishing trips. For longer paddles, a lengthier kayak paddle can help you generate more speed and power. For short trips, you can probably get away with a shorter kayak paddle.
  • Weight: A lighter kayak paddle is preferable for longer trips and will make your arms less fatigued. However, lighter kayak paddles can often more expensive and less durable. If your kayak fishing trips are short and/or require you to push off the bottom with your kayak paddle, you're better off choosing a heavier and sturdier kayak paddle.
  • Blade: The more surface area a kayak paddle blade has, the more force you can generate with each stroke. However, larger blades also encounter more water resistance per stroke. If your kayak fishing trips are short and/or your upper body under endurance is on the weaker side, choose a kayak paddle blade with less surface area.

The Right Accessories

Getting the most out of your kayak paddle can be one of the most important aspects of your kayak fishing adventures.

  • Leash: As a matter of safety and security, kayak paddle leashes are critical if fishing in turbulent waters and/or areas with strong currents. Without a kayak paddle leash, you can be stranded and unable to maneuver your kayak.
  • Grips: Similar to kayak paddle leashes, having the right grip system can be a matter of security and comfort. To prevent blisters and ensure that you always have a firm grip on your kayak paddle, look for grips with a soft but textured finish. You may also want to choose lighter-colored grips if you fish in a hot environment.

The Right Modifications

You can make some easy modifications to your kayak paddle to improve your kayak fishing experience.

  • Measurement: You can create a quick fishing measurement ruler on your kayak paddle shaft. This can allow you to quickly measure the fish you want to keep.
  • Finish: Spraying your kayak paddle with a textured spray paint can add grip and help you easily customize your kayak paddle.
